Joy Division

Pitchfork gave the Rhino Records Joy Division re-issues a 10.0, 10.0 and 8.4 today (for Unknown Pleasures, Closer and Still respectively).

Want to hear with all the fuss is about?

I'll be playing tracks from these albums as well as their companion live discs at The Winchester on Tuesday night.

5-6SLT - Joy Division

6-7SLT - Cuts from the Control soundtrack.

9-10SLT - Joy Division, entirely different songs from the 5-6 set

Seriously, I put the songs in my iTunes and I've got 5 hours of Joy Division from those three CDs alone. It's worth your ears.

My First Sunday at the Silo

We worked it like magic last Sunday and this Sunday was my first in my new timeslot at the Silo. It was one of those gray, cold, rainy Sundays so I tossed on a turtleneck and played some lazy Sunday songs - one part apathy, one part depression, mix in some keyboards and stir well. Visit the French Alps, Red Square and Wired Magazine

There's so much crap you didn't know existed in Second Life that it's almost frightening. Today I bring you a win, a wamp wamp and a why bother?

I like to do things when I go out to do things. It's why I like the Weather Channel's weather island. Along those lines is Winter Sports at the Alps in SL. You can get a free snowboard and boots and race down a hill. It's hardcore though, the race actually disqualified me for cheating at least once. It has a great ski lift teleport so you can race again and again.

The snowman is my new friend.

I also like finding real places in SL for a quick visit. SL's Moscow - Red Square is fun for the photo opp but there's not much to do once you're there. Just like the real Moscow?

Finally, Wired magazine are living large in Second Life. I didn't know working there was all champagne parties and sushi.

DJ obsessions at The Winchester

If you didn't get the memo, I'm the new Friday night DJ at The Winchester. Normally I'll be on from 6-8SLT, but last night I was on from 7-11. Ha! It was really just supposed to be 7-9 but I was having so much fun that I couldn't stop.

Last night's theme was obsessions - I played a ton of songs I am or have been obsessed with at some point in life and I took lots of requests of songs the crowd The Win are obsessed with - and made them share their story. I learned that Nica Oh went to a Pixies show in a U-Mass sweatshirt just for them; that playing both the Damned AND the Jayhawks won't make Lanark go to sleep even if he's bitching about how he needs to go to sleep; that Cate is now hooked on the Velvet Teen cos Jasper plays them so much; that Kasabian wants me to play something I hate every time I don't have one of his requests; Sjo is semi-emo but does not *like* Iron Maiden; and I already knew but heard again how much PitPat is obsessed with Control, the Joy Division movie.

I also learned that my mic wasn't working with Nicecast yet. Oopsie.

What Are You Doing for Halloween?

The other day in SL I went searching for Halloween stuff. I stumbled on a haunted cave.

And then the rope bridge fell out from under me and dropped me in...a hell dimension?

After that things got really spooky.

After I saw the ghost I got scared and ran off to this miner's cave that I thought was an escape route.

And if you want to know what happened in there you're going to have to ride the ride yourself.

Creepy!

The Land That Art Forgot

I've been working on it forever, but have been constantly delayed. However, this weekend, I finally completed my photography gallery!

It's called The Land That Art Forgot and it's currently featuring (mostly) photos I took of indie bands like Sonic Youth, the White Stripes, Bjork, Klaxons, Ted Leo, Jamie T, Bloc Party, Air and more!

There are also some interesting (I think anyway) shots of the Empire State Building via Little Itlay (so like the trashy view) and a few random snaps.

Everything there is available for you to look at (if you're a looky-loo) and also to buy. If you're looking for that perfect poster for your house in Second Life, I just may have it! Come now while everything's cheap.

OMG they hate me!

You know how it goes when you mean to sign on for a minute to do just one little thing and then someone IMs you to say there's a rogue noob doing weird stuff that you should really come see and then you TP only to find someone you haven't talked with in ages is there and the music is really good and then you get another IM and end up going somewhere else and the next thing you know it's late o'clock and you haven't shaved your legs yet?

That was tonight in SL. OMGWTF Barbecue threatened to unBFF me for leaving just when she signed on. Oopsie.

Here's a shot of the crowd at the Rails Club.

Told you I was going to blog it!

How to DJ in Second Life Using Nicecast

Nicecast is really the only software out there if you want to be a Second Life DJ on a Mac. In my searches on the Internets I didn't see any step-by-step guides for how to actually do it though! Hence, I'm publishing one that I hope you'll find helpful.

DOWNLOADING AND USING NICECAST

Head to the Nicecast site and you can get a free trial of the software. The good thing about Nicecast is the provide built in streaming servers that you can practice on so if you decide DJing isn't for you then not only have you got free software but you didn't have to buy a stream to play on!

First of all you're going to need a program that plays music (like iTunes). Once you have that and Nicecast, you'll want to use their manual to set everything up. Like almost all Mac applications, Nicecast has a very easy interface and is quite simple to set up. If you have problems, they have a customer support team who are happy to answer any questions you email in within 24 hours. They have helped me with multiple weird and random questions I've sent in! It's a real all-in-one application - you can stream music with effects that will allow you to do voice overs from your microphone, do professional quality tone tinkering and even put a karaoke effect on songs.

BROADCASTING TO THE INTERNET

This is the tricky part that I got hung up on. The most important thing to accomplishing actual broadcasting is calling your ISP and asking for control of your router, if you have one. You will have to turn off router (and computer) firewalls and allow port connections. That sounds complicated but it really isn't - most ISPs have a web browser interface that they will give you access to in order to do these very things. And what ports are and why you need the will become apparent as you play with and set up Nicecast.

Once you've done this you should have no problem reaching a Nicecast server and broadcasting out to the world. However, Nicecast only supplies you a beginner stream that will accommodate 8 listeners at a time. Each avatar listening to you in Second Life will count as one listener in the stream so using the Nicecast servers is excellent for practice while you're first starting, but eventually you'll want your own stream or you'll DJ in a club who have an external stream they prefer you to use.

The Nicecast manual also covers streaming on external servers but I found that my computer got hung up when I was adding new external servers and adjusting my router information. Strangely enough a simple restart fixed the problem.

MOVING INTO SECOND LIFE

So when you begin to DJ it is generally best to create a playlist in iTunes (or whatever music program you're using) in advance so you don't get any nasty music surprises if you get distracted by the chat or a program error.

If you are playing somewhere with it's own stream then you'll just need to put the server information they give you into Nicecast and go.

If you are using your own stream you'll need to adjust the media stream for the land - the land owner may want to do it themselves or they may want you to do it. If it's left to you, just click on a patch of grass or water on the land they own and pull up the about land tab. They will have had to add you to a group so you can access the media stream info on the land and insert your streaming URL. This is available in your Nicecast app under the "share" button.

You're all ready to broadcast at this point! If you want to talk between songs then go to your "effects" button and for one of the inserts select "4FX Effect" and then "VoiceOver". A little menu will come up that allows you to select your microphone, buffer, etc. Get everything how you like it, close the little menu window and then in the "effect" window make sure you push down the BYPASS button on the VoiceOver effect until you're actually ready to talk - this is basically a mute button. If you need to adjust any settings on it again you can select EDITOR.

Finally, you want to go to the "quality" tab and set your bitrate and sample rate. Bitrate doesn't need to be more than 96Kbps. You can go higher with a higher speed Internet connection, but the quality at 96Kbps is perfectly fine for audio broadcasting. Sample rate is fine at anywhere from 24.00 Khz and up. If you find your stream constantly skipping or buffering then you may need to readjust the bitrate and sample rate you're broadcasting at.

After doing all of that you should be ready to go - all you have to do is make sure your music library is big enough!

Astrud's First Night - thanks to The Winchester!

After months of backseat DJing (so much backseating that PitPat Wildcat made me an official "Backseat DJ" tag), I finally bothered applying some elbow grease to getting Nicecast to work and made my DJ debut.

The nice folks at The Winchester (and Sjofin Oh in particular) were kind enough to break my cherry and several of you came by for my Indie Power Pop night. Thanks for that! By the request of a few, I'm biting Jasper's style and making a set list blog.
